Gayta Science’s own Kelsey Campbell was one of the leaders interviewed as part of Roadtrip Nation’s “At Your Fingertips” Computer Science Roadtrip special, streaming now online and on PBS!
Film Overview
Follow along as Megan, Sage, and Devohne—three young adults eager to explore the opportunities available to them in the computer science industry—travel across the country to talk with software engineers, data scientists, professors, product managers, and more. Fueled by the National Science Foundation, “At Your Fingertips” follows these three young people on a journey to carve out their unique space in the world of computer science. Their stories and those of the inspiring people they meet are proof people underrepresented in the computer science field are a key part of driving the industry forward as a whole.
Representation in Tech
It is amazing to watch Megan, Sage, and Devohne go on this journey and continue this important conversation around diversity and inclusion in tech. This is a big issue to explore in only an hour, but the film does an impressive job touching on representation in terms of race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, non-traditional education, family background, parent status, and more! As technology continues to touch more and more aspects of our daily lives, lack of diversity in the field is a major concern. As Software Developer Ryan Johnson says during his interview, “If you’re building software for the entire world, then that should reflect people of many different backgrounds”.
Kelsey’s interview focused on their experience being non-binary and queer in tech and striving to be authentic in environments that don’t always feel welcoming. They also had the chance to share their Plot Me Genderfluid piece and talk about the importance of data for marginalized communities.
