These stories are needed
Even with increased visibility in recent years, the LGBTQ+ community still offers an under-examined perspective. Data driven research is one way to explore endless aspects of these experiences, providing important insights.
The time is now
Lack of large scale and reliable data sources have long plagued this domain. However, we have access to more information today than ever before! Leveraging open-source resources, tools, and techniques allows us to thrive despite data availability challenges.
Change is happening
The larger goal is to provide a more empirical lens in which to view the LGBTQ+ community; challenging more prevalent stances centered on religious and/or individualized beliefs and opinions. Ultimately, this can result in expanded outlooks, better understanding, and more inclusive policies!

Project analyzing data on individual gender fluctuations over time as part of a continuous self-exploration of gender identity. Results and outputs include an interactive visualization created with d3.js and insights extracted from a daily log of text descriptions and other indicators. (2014-2017)
Study of income differences between partnered gay individuals compared to their similarly committed straight counterparts using a 2009 large scale government dataset. Analysis is then expanded to explore if differing state laws pertaining to banning or allowing same-sex unions (marriage, civil unions, etc.) have a causal effect on the incomes of gay individuals living in those states. (2011)
